Who Can Race?
Races are organized into separate classes for girls and boys. Age groups start with 5 and under and go all the way to 51 and over. Each of these age groups are split into three skill levels: Novice, Intermediate and Expert. All riders start as novices and work up to the more advanced levels by winning races.
What kind of bike do I need?
All you'll need a 20inch BMX type bike in good working order.
No chainguards, reflectors or kickstands. The bike must have functioning brakes. Handgrips and bar ends covered. You'll also need a pad set to cover the stem,top tube and the handlebars crossbar. There is also a Cruiser class that is offered. A Cruiser is a bike with larger wheels most common is 24’’
Inexpensive new or used bikes can be found at bike shops, Ebay and even at the races.
What other equipment will I need?
A helmet is required. The ABA recommends a full face type. Some tracks require a full face helmet. And some tracks have helmets for beginners to use until they get their own. Also required are long sleeve shirt and long pants. Glove are optional but do offer protection from abrasions.
How much does it cost to race?
The ABA offers a 30 day trial membership for $25. This entitles you to race at your local track and provides you with medical insurance coverage. A one year membership costs only $45 and allows you to race on ABA tracks nationwide. A full membership also includes a monthly issue of BMXer magazine, with up to date points standings and nationwide race coverage.
Once your an ABA member, the only other cost will be the race day fees. Fees vary some from track to track, but typically are from $8.00 to $10.00. Indoor events are a little more, but offers you racing year round.
